Biomimicry or biomimetics is the study of nature’s models, techniques, components, and procedures to be able to gain inspiration to solve real human problems. The word biomimicry originates from the Greek term bios which means life and mimesis meaning to imitate. Bionics, bio-inspiration, and biognosis are additional words which are frequently used in this discipline.
Nature has gone through the massive trial and error process to refine living things, procedures, and components of the ecosystems throughout billions of years. The industry of biomimicry has inspired many new technologies created from biological engineering in all areas down to even the nanoscale levels. Humans have been looking to nature to resolve problems of both complex and simplistic character since the beginning of humanity. To many current engineering problems including wind resistance, harnessing solar energy, and fuel issues, mother nature has influenced solutions.
The term biomimetics is frequently used to describe the movement of ideas from biology to the discipline of technology. Defined as “the study of the formation, framework, or purpose of biologically produced substances and components and biological mechanisms and procedures especially for the purpose of synthesizing comparable produces by man-made mechanisms which mirror natural kinds,” the term did not get into Webster’s Dictionary until 1974.
An early instance of biomimicry was studying wild birds to inspire real human flight. Leonardo da Vinci acutely examined the anatomy and flight of wild birds, even though he wasn’t effective in creating a flying machine. He made numerous drawings and commentary on his findings and drew numerous potential designs for flying devices. Far more effectively, the Wright Brothers derived inspiration for their aircraft by watching pigeons in flight. The imitation of nano and macro level structures and processes is known as nanobiomimicry. A plethora of nano-sized materials which they can use to create new components is one thing which nature provides people. A few examples of natural things that can be used to produce brand new components are bacteria, diatoms, viruses, and biomolecules. Technology has been powered by nanodevices such as nanowires and quantum dots in a manner that far more standard human methods couldn’t.

There are many fascinating instances of innovations brought about by biomimicry that are widely used nowadays. The creation of velcro was inspired when a Swiss engineer observed that burrs were very difficult to remove from his dog’s fur. After looking under a microscopic lense, he observed that the burrs had tiny barbs that caught in anything with a loop therefore he come up with the system of one strip of loops and one of hooks. The glow in the dark aquarium tank fish found in today’s pet stores are another instance of a biomimicry development. These enjoyable and entertaining pets were inspired when researchers came across florescent proteins discovered in jellyfish. The field of biomimicry will continue to bring incredible innovations to individuals all over the world.
