The country of Panama has an abundant variety of attractions to entertain and fascinate any visitors who make their way to its land. From the stunning coasts to the high mountain peaks in the Chiriqui province, the country is now becoming a popular destination for travellers from all over the world.
The name Panama means an abundance of fish, trees and butterflies and this can be seen throughout the different provinces. With many animals and plants found nowhere else in the world, the unique wildlife of the country makes it a strong hold for research into new medicines. Bird watching is a very popular activity with visiting tourists, there are rare hummingbirds and tyrannulets to be seen by avid watchers.
Located around the Baru volcano, the small town of Volcan in the Chiriqui province is an attractive area to visit. The two neighbouring cities, Boquete and Cerro Punta have been tourists destinations for many years, the smaller Volcan is recently beginning to offer its attraction to tourists as well. Built is an area full of natural springs, the area is home to many forests and waterfalls which offer a picturesque view.
The Chiriqui province boosts the highest mountain in the country; standing over the surrounding countryside Mount Baru has not had a major eruption since 500CE. Smaller eruptions were recorded around one thousand years later and occasional recent earthquakes demonstrate that the volcano is still a potential threat although dormant at the moment.
As Panama inhabits the isthmus between Central and South America a person standing at the top of Mount Baru will have an unbelievable view. Standing at over 11,000 ft high, the mountain top offers a view of both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean on a clear day, creating an unforgettable memory. The volcano enriched soils surrounding Mount Baru means the city of Volcan is rich with produce. Abundant plant life surrounds the region and the largest rainforest outside of the Amazon basin can be found nearby.
Adventure holidays are becoming a draw card for the Chiriqui region, with easy access to both the sea and the forest adventure seekers can easily find an activity to get their adrenalin rushing. Coral reefs offer a spectacular scuba diving location while the sharp pointed mountain peaks are a great place for hikers to explore. Canoeing along the rivers is also popular with visitors and is a great way to see the rainforest.
The Chiriqui province was first discovered in 1519 while it was still a part of Columbia. In 1849 it officially became a region of Panama and due to the highly fertile nature of the soil and abundant animals was the first choice for the colony proposed by Abraham Lincoln, Linconia, intended to house freed slaves.
Panama is proud of its climate, year round stability means it is a comfortable location for many visitors to visit. With daily temperatures averaging around 90 degrees Fahrenheit and dropping to a balmy 70 degrees at night the country is a pleasant place to visit. On occasion the cooler mountain region has reported a small flurry of snow, this is a rare sight and one to be treasured
